💼 Job Description
The Underground Electrician will be responsible for carrying out preventive, scheduled and breakdown electrical maintenance across underground mining operations.
The main objective of the role is to ensure mining equipment remains safe, reliable and productive while reducing equipment downtime and maintaining high standards of workplace safety.
The successful candidate will work closely with underground supervisors and other technical teams to maintain electrical systems, troubleshoot faults, perform installations and ensure equipment is available for mining operations.
🔧 Key Duties and Responsibilities
1. Safety & Compliance
The Underground Electrician will:
- Conduct daily workplace inspections and pre-start checks.
- Identify and rectify electrical and workplace hazards.
- Follow Safe Work Instructions and Procedures.
- Comply with company health, safety, environmental and operational requirements.
- Maintain good housekeeping standards in underground work areas.
- Ensure electrical work is performed safely and according to approved procedures.
2. Underground Electrical Maintenance
Responsibilities will include:
- Performing scheduled electrical servicing and maintenance.
- Carrying out electrical repairs and fault finding.
- Troubleshooting electrical equipment and systems.
- Installing and maintaining underground mine communication systems, including Leaky Feeder systems.
- Installing and maintaining primary and secondary mine ventilation systems.
- Maintaining I-Kon blasting/firing lines.
- Maintaining underground mine dewatering systems.
- Rebuilding and maintaining Flygt and Stalker pumps where required.
3. Equipment & Operational Support
The successful candidate will also:
- Inspect electrical tools and equipment regularly.
- Carry out routine servicing to ensure equipment is safe and functional.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics.
- Use service sheets and spare-parts manuals when performing maintenance.
- Maintain accurate service and maintenance records.
- Report equipment faults and parts requirements to supervisors.
- Communicate equipment availability and operational status to the Underground Shift Supervisor.
🎓 Qualifications and Requirements
Education & Trade Qualification
Applicants should have:
- A recognized Trade Qualification/Certificate as an Electrician.
- Basic knowledge of First Aid.
- Good numeracy skills.
- Strong verbal and written English communication skills.
⛏️ Mining Experience
Experience in underground hard-rock mechanized mining will be highly beneficial.
Candidates with hands-on experience working with Sandvik drilling equipment, particularly:
will have relevant technical exposure for the role.
Applicants should also demonstrate the ability to:
- Read and interpret electrical schematics.
- Troubleshoot electrical faults.
- Perform electrical maintenance procedures.
- Work safely in underground mining environments.
🚗 Licence & Personal Attributes
Applicants should have:
- A valid Tanzanian Driver's Licence.
- Ability to drive a manual transmission vehicle.
- A positive attitude toward physically demanding underground work.
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
- Good teamwork and communication skills.
- Strong commitment to safety and operational standards.
